Carter Budget Committee to recommend upgrade to Workforce Development Complex - Johnson City Press (subscription)

The county-owned building has been leased to Carter County Tomorrow for the past several years in order to promote that agency’s efforts at economic development. But the Workforce Development Complex has now been returned to the county with the dissolution of Carter County Tomorrow at the end of this year.

The reacquisition is coming at a good time for the county, thanks to the need for more space for a virtual reality training program that started this year in the Elizabethton City School System. The Mississippi company that brought the program to the Elizabethton school system is now seeking to partner with the county, especially for workspace in the Workforce Development Complex.

The area under consideration is the second floor that had once been part of a motel call center. The floor space was underused after the call center left because there was no elevator to provide access under the Americans with Disabilities Act. For that reason, Northeast State Community College’s Elizabethton campus did not use that section of the building when it located its operations in the Complex.

Ironically, one of Carter County’s improvements to the building in the last few years was to install the elevator, so that section of the building would be available for virtual reality rooms.

In a unanimous action, the Budget Committee also voted to recommend to the full Commission that a repaving project be approved on the grounds.
